This year's SIHH, unlike the editions of the recent past, was not focused on the race for the most complicated watch in the world or with the most tourbillons. The attention of some of the three main watchmaking houses has instead focused on the use of new technical solutions to improve the precision and reliability of their watches.
Panerai surprised everyone with the new model Lab-ID Luminor 1950 Carbotech 3 Days (PAM700). A technologically advanced watch thanks to the use of new materials applied to the new one Caliber P.3001 / C able to reduce the friction between the various components.
Another novelty is the total absence of lubrication, which is why Panerai is able to guarantee the functioning of this revolutionary timepiece for 50 years.
How was it possible to achieve such a milestone in terms of reliability?
The use of self-lubricating materials or dry lubrication on most of the components subject to wear was fundamental.
The uniqueness of the P.3001 caliber is clearly visible thanks to its semi-skeletonized structure which, in the eyes of the most attentive, strikes for its almost total absence of rubies on bridges and plate. The only four rubies are present on the pivots of the balance wheel axis, which are also treated with a layer of DLC to avoid traditional lubrication.
Bridges and platen were made from a new low-friction material which contains a tantalum-based ceramic. Precisely due to the drastic reduction of rotational friction, and consequently also of the wear of the components, the usefulness and the necessary lubrication of the rubies are lost.
I two barrels present in the P.3001 / C caliber do not require the traditional lubrication made of oils and greases, as they are coated with a series of carbon-based layers plus a final surface layer in DLC (Diamond Like Carbon).
The case (49mm) and the characteristic crown-protecting bridge are made of Carbotech, carbon-fiber-based composite material that looks dull and uneven black.
The black sandwich dial covered with one carbon nanotube layer, seems to absorb all the surrounding light, enhancing the SuperLumiNova blu applied on spheres and indexes.
Due to the treatment with nanotubes to which it has been subjected, it cannot be engraved or printed, which is why the words "Luminor Panerai"And LAB-ID they have been made directly on the sapphire crystal with double anti-reflective treatment.
The sapphire crystal case back allows you to admire the P.3001 / C Manufacture caliber and monitor the 72-hour power reserve using the special indicator.
With the new Lab-ID Luminor 1950 Carbotech 3 Days, Panerai has successfully managed to carry out a long research work, developing what could be the watch of the future. A movement with refined solutions that has its strong point in reliability. One wonders if Panerai will succeed, or will want to apply some of these techniques even on more 'commercial' models in order to make its legendary timepieces even more efficient.
If, on the other hand, you are eager to make this Panerai avant-garde your own, the price is 50.000€ available in only 50 pieces.
