On December 4th 2019 Richard Mille, as it used to do for a year now, presented via Instagram and with press event at Four Season Hotel in Milan the latest model of its wide collection, the RM 11-04 Roberto Mancini.
As many fans already know, Roberto Mancini, coach of Italy national football team, is Richard Mille brand ambassador for quite a long time.
In my previous article about the birth of Richard Mille myth I have explained how these watches are designed by following finalized rules to overpass precise targets, going beyond the limits of watchmaking. But which are these goals or limits to be surpassed for a football manager? Before RM 11-01 and 11-04 there wasn’t a chronograph dedicated only to the world of football.
RM 11-01 and 04 are chronograph watches designed to time a football match, they are exclusively created for this sport and they are unique on the market. It does not exist any other watch which allows you to have a so easy and fast reading of time, extra time and overtime during a match. Exactly by following its philosophy, Richard Mille has reached unconventional universes and environments far from canonical horology.
THE FOOTBALL CHRONOGRAPH
In relation to a classic chronograph there are two coaxial hands with hours and minutes, one for the minutes (green-white-red tricoloured arrow) and one for the seconds (red tip hand). The start button of the chronograph moves both the hands and the visualization of the chronometric scale is optimized and extended to the entire dial to show the minutes passed from the beginning of the match. Once arrived to 45 minutes, in correspondence with the most critical phase of the game in case of uncertain result, it is possible to keep under control the extra time, a detail which is not highlighted by the stadium official chronometers.
Thanks to flyback function you can restart the chronograph with the beginning of the second half without stopping it with the dedicated button at 2. At 3 it has been foreseen a zone to show the extra time of the overtime. As you can easily note from the pics, the chronograph time visualization is extremely clear and it allows Roberto to accurately manage the remaining time to the match end together with the high stress he’s subjected to.
Simply defining the RM 11-04 and update of RM 11-01 wouldn’t do it enough justice to the research Richard Mille is conducting. Several details mark the two models but must of them are hide to the users:
Case material: from full titanium or combination of titanium and rose gold bezel, Richard Mille has introduced the use of Carbon TPT®. This material consists of the application of swiss company NTPT (North Thin Ply Technology) technology, that is the overlapping of 600 thin carbon layers (30 micron) conveniently oriented (45°) and impregnated by a special resin. Once they’re put in an autoclave with 120°C and a pressure of 6 bar they reach high mechanical properties with extreme lightness, even better that titanium. This case guarantees a waterproofness of 50m.
Movement update: From automatic calibre RMAC1 Richard Mille decided to mount the more recent RMAC3 which shows an update of the gears profile, of the finishings and further reduces the weight/resistance ratio. Even RMAC3 has a grade 5 titanium baseplate covered by PVD technique. The complications and the movement main characteristics remain unvaried. In addition to flyback chronograph with central minute and second counter there is the oversized data at 12 and the month display at 4-5 (annual calendar).
There is always the variable geometry rotor, which can be customised according to the watch application, and the double barrel with a power reserve of 55h and even 45h with working chronograph. Generally speaking, it is possible to say that RMAC3 calibre is an overall optimization of the previous one.
Winding Crown: it is updated by using the same one already mounted on RM 11-03. The number of micro machining operations to refine this component is quite high and I’d like you to note the 16 micro-drillings done on its conical surface and the double engraved rubberizing able to increase its mechanical grip during the regulating operations.
Colours: RM 11-04 is characterised by the use of Tricolore flag and Azzurri jersey colours. The minute chronographic scale together with the minute hand are coloured by green, white and red while the rubber strap, the winding crow n the speedometer rehaut are blue. Also start/stop and reset/flyback indications show the Tricolore colours.
Within all the RM collection RM 11-01 honestly resulted to be quite passed, it required a certain material upgrade and a new branding restyling able to enhance its characteristics. The combination with coach Mancini and, consequently, with our national foot ball team (Italy) is certainly a good marketing strategy which allows Richard Mille to revamp and consolidate its relationship with football.
The public price of this new RM 11-04 is about 200’000 euro exactly as the others RM 11-03 made by Carbon and Qartz TPT®.
