First introduced in 2015, it has since been crafted in red gold, platinum, white gold and titanium. This new version with 18-karat yellow gold case and ultramarine blue dial joins the group in a limited edition of 25 pieces.

Starting with a blank sheet, MB&F and the independent Irish watchmaker SStephen McDonnell they have entirely reinvented the most traditional of watchmaking complications: the perpetual calendar. The result is Legacy Machine Perpetual, with a visually striking in-house movement, developed completely from scratch to eliminate the drawbacks of conventional perpetual calendars.

The fact that the new complication looks sensational and can be fully appreciated from the dial side is just one of the many advantages offered by the new movement, controlled by a still patent-pending mechanical processor.

La Legacy Machine Perpetual it features a fully integrated 581 component caliber, no modules, no basic movement, and a revolutionary new system for calculating the number of days in each month. It holistically reinterprets the aesthetics of the perpetual calendar by placing the whole complication on the free dial under a spectacular suspended balance wheel.

The perpetual calendar is one of the traditional grand complications, calculating the seemingly random complexity of changing the number of days in each month - including the month of February from 29 days in leap years. But traditional perpetual calendars have some drawbacks: dates can jump; they are relatively easy to damage if they are corrected while the date is changing, and the complications are generally trade-offs of basic motion-powered modules.

The specially created and fully integrated movement of the Legacy Machine Perpetual It was designed from the ground up for hassle-free use: there will be no more date skips or gear disturbances, and the auto-adjust will automatically turn off when the calendar changes, so there will be no problem!

The traditional perpetual calendar mechanism uses a 31-day month as the default and basically “eliminates” unnecessary dates for months with fewer days - quickly advancing into redundant dates during the change. A traditional perpetual calendar runs from February 28th to March 1st, swiping through the 29th, 30th and 31st to get to the 1st.

La Legacy Machine Perpetual turns the traditional perpetual calendar system into its head by using a "mechanical processor" instead of the conventional system with the grand levier (large lever) which takes up a lot of space. The mechanical processor uses a default month of 28 days and adds extra days when needed. This means that each month always has the exact number of days; there is no fast forward or skip of redundant days. And while the leap year can only be set on traditional perpetual calendars by scrolling down to 47 months, the Legacy Machine Perpetual has a dedicated quick setting button to adjust the year.

With its free dial that reveals all the complication and the suspended balance wheel, it is the harmonious mechanical beauty of the Legacy Machine Perpetual to really steal the show. Thanks to an interesting technical twist, the eye-catching balance wheel hovers high and is connected to the escapement at the rear of the movement by what is arguably the longest axis in the world.

Using an innovative system developed specifically for the Legacy Machine Perpetual, the secondary quadrants seem to "float" above the movement without being visibly connected to it. The skeletonized secondary dials rest on hidden pins, which is technically impossible with traditional perpetual calendar mechanisms because they would block the movement of the grand levier.

Turning the dial clockwise, at 12 o'clock we see the hour and minutes set between the elegant arches of the balance wheel; the day of the week at 3 o'clock, the power reserve indicator at 4 o'clock, the month at 6 o'clock, the retrograde leap year indicator at 7, and the date at 9 o'clock. Legacy Machine Perpetual won the Best Calendar Watch award at the GPHG (Geneva Watchmaking Grand Prix) in 2016. This new yellow gold version will be available at a price of 147.000 EURO excluding taxes.
