Building on the success of the Openworked “ One & Two ” collection with several models launched over the past two years, which marked a new aesthetic design code for the brand, Speake-Marin now extends its Openworked range with a new complication: a 60-second flying tourbillon.
The new SMA05 caliber is part of the SMA family of proprietary movements and follows the “ Openworked Collection ” construction approach with a key element positioned at 1:30 o’clock: the flying tourbillon. By displaying a tourbillon cage in this position, Speake-Marin ’s aim is to break away from traditional watchmaking codes. This is actually a real constraint in terms of movement development, as the tourbillon cage positioned there must pass through the time-setting module. Placing the small seconds in this spot is truly complicated, as the tourbillon cage requires more space in length and depth. The tourbillon cage is covered by the iconic Speake-Marin rotor shape in black, a reminder of the Speake-Marin logo.
The main plate has a micro-blasted black finish that gives depth to the dial. The adjusting organ is particularly accurate, with an accuracy of +/- 4 seconds per day, which is an excellent performance for mechanical movements with a flying tourbillon. For this new movement, Speake-Marin has chosen to develop a movement at 3 HZ (21.600 alt / h).
Last but not least, the caliber SMA05 shows a power reserve indicator at 7:30 (72 hours). It creates a visual balance between the barrel, oscillating weight, tourbillon and power reserve, while the sharp edges of the bridges counterbalance the classic case shape. On the barrel is engraved with the model name: "One & Two Openworked Flying Tourbillon".
This movement is housed in a new version of the Piccadilly case, an evolution of the iconic Speake-Marin case . It is more technical than the original, allowing for the crown to be moved, softening its aesthetic while still retaining its original DNA. The bezel and case back slightly overlap the central section of the case, altering the overall look of the watch while maintaining the iconoclastic feel of Speake-Marin . Furthermore, the crystal traditionally inserted into the bezel has now been modified, reducing the overall thickness of the case and accentuating the technical aspect of the watch.
