As we are used to doing by now, partly due to the COVID-19 situation and partly due to a precise marketing strategy, Richard Mille presented the latest addition in his wide range of references via Instagram with two dedicated posts: 'RM 11-05. As the most passionate of you will have already noticed, this new model belongs to the RM 11-XX series dedicated to chronographs, the trademark for a brand whose motto is "a racing machine on the wrist". ). Continuing the path taken with the RM 11-04 in December 2019, this new RM 11-05 is the updating of the previous RM 11-02 presented in 2014.

THERM 11-02 is a flyback chronograph with GMT function, still in the collection, with the in-house caliber RMAC1 and is available in numerous variations and combinations of materials, from versions completely in titanium or rose gold to mixes of Carbon TPT for the cash desk e ATZ ceramic for the bezel and back (as happens for the version dedicated to the LeMans Classic of which Richard Mille is the official sponsor). With the new RM 11-05 some are introduced important news for this reference but already presented by Richard Mille on other collections: the caliber RMAC3, new winding crown and Cermets used for the bezel.

Caliber RMAC3

While maintaining the same complication configuration as the previous version, the new caliber is an optimization of the RMAC1. It presents an update in the profiles of the gear wheels, reduces the weight / resistance ratio even more, completely modifies the skeletonization giving the watch a series of incredibly magnetic reflections in the light and renewing it from a technological point of view.

The complications present are numerous. In addition to the hour and minute hands we have the central chronograph seconds, the small continuous seconds at 3 o'clock, the minute counter with possible countdown given by the indication on the rotating disc at 9 o'clock, the 24-hour counter at 6 o'clock, the large date at 12 o'clock, the indication of the month which constitutes the annual calendar at 4 o'clock and the indication of the second time zone by means of a dedicated hand that can be modified with a special button at 9 o'clock.

The power reserve amounts to about 50 hours, the rotor of the automatic winding is always with a modifiable geometry, the balance wheel has variable inertia and there are two winding barrels to improve the consistency of torque delivery over time. Everything you could ask of a Richard Mille other than a tourbillon is there.

Winding crown

Winding crown: as happened for the Roberto Mancini RM 11-04, the excellently worked winding crown already mounted on the RM 11-03 is used which constitutes a significant improvement over the previous one both in terms of finishes and grip.

Cermets

The bezel of the new RM 11-05 is made of this particular material, already introduced on the RM 52-05 dedicated to Pahrrell Williams. By Cermet we mean the category of materials composed of the union of a metallic and a ceramic material (with the particular presence of titanium carbonitride) and is used for various purposes ranging from tools for mechanical processing to coatings for satellites that cross the atmosphere. The advantages of this material are the base density (4,1 g /) which involves lightness, resistance to thermal shock andhigh hardness (2'360 vickers, very similar to that of the diamente), characteristics that contribute to having a high resistance to scratches and wear, exactly what is required of a bezel. The gray tone of the material is obtained by bonding a zirconium metal matrix with high-performance ceramic elements. I also point out the complete lack of cobalt and nickel, generally used as binding elements, within the chemical composition of the material in question in accordance with the REACH standard required by the European Union.

To complete the watch there is the case in Carbon TPT, a material that we have now come to know and appreciate on several RMs, and a titanium caseback, rigorously open and with sapphire crystal. The external structure of the watch is therefore made up of three materials of a completely different nature: Cermet for the bezel, Carbon TPT for the case and titanium for the back. The case dimensions remain 50 x 42.70 x 16.15 mm while its shape does not change compared to its predecessor, as well as the guaranteed water resistance to 50m. Finally, a combination of orange and light blue details was used for the decorations on the dial, reminiscent of the “Last Edition” of the RM 011-FM and the RM 60-01 Les Voiles de Saint Barth.

As stated above, this RM 11-05 is a 'updating of RM 11-02, we could almost call it the final or definitive edition of the series given that all the latest technological innovations that the brand has presented are present. Although the introduction of the RMAC3 caliber required some work to adapt to the complications of the RM 11-02 and the development of a proprietary Cermet material required numerous efforts (years of research, partnership and huge money) to be fine-tuned eliminating alloy elements not suitable for use in a wristwatch, I would have liked to have seen a further technological push on this RM 11-05, perhaps towards a thinning of the case thickness. Who knows that in the future Richard Mille will not face this umpteenth great challenge.

The RM 11-05 is available from July 2020 in a limited edition of 140 pieces. The price has not yet been communicated.
