At Watches & Wonder Rolex unveiled the new generation of Rolex Datejust 36 with a series of new textured dials, introducing a 'palm leaf' motif and a fluted motif that echoes the knurling of the iconic bezels. The new dials are available in three colors - olive green, gold and dark silver - but the fluted pattern is also available in blue.

The new dials are radially brushed and then the pattern is applied with a femtosecond laser, which repeats the chosen pattern at various angles. The 'palm leaves' motif is made in two contrasting shades that give a play of light and shadow and a sense of depth. This brand new dial can be configured in olive green and Oystersteel steel, yellow Rolesor and golden dial, Oystersteel - Everose gold and silver dial.

The dials with grooved motif are available in blue, in Oystersteel and rounded or fluted bezel; in white gold with gilt dial in Oystersteel and yellow and silvered gold in the Oystersteel and Everose gold configuration.

The new Datejust 36 are identical to the models presented at Baselworld 2018, equipped with the caliber 3235 entirely developed and produced by Rolex, which includes the new Chronergy escapement which combines high energy efficiency and great reliability. Made of a nickel-phosphorus alloy, this escapement is insensitive to magnetic fields. Like every Rolex watch, the Datejust 36 boasts Superlative Chronometer certification which guarantees exceptional performance on the wrist. The case is fully polished, equipped with a sapphire crystal with a date lens and a Twinlock screw-down crown.

Considerations

The new dials have been the subject of much discussion among enthusiasts. Especially on the olive green dial that incorporates the palm leaf motif. Personally, this last dial pleasantly surprised me. Let's be clear, it's true we are not talking about a particular complication or technical innovation, but watchmaking is also emotion or the evocation of a memory, of a state of mind. Well, this unusual dial 'captured' me evoking moments of carefree and holiday summers, in the company of a good cigar and why not, of this new Datejust 36.

Another version that represents what I would define as a 'perfect fusion' between dial, bezel and bracelet is the configuration with gold-colored fluted dial with Oysteerstel steel and yellow gold case and bracelet. Usually I don't like the combination of these two materials, but in this case I think it is one of the best steel-gold watches ever made by Rolex. In addition, it takes up the motif that you will find present in the latest boutiques created by the Geneva house.
