OMEGA Speedmaster 38 mm: a new identity in seven references

OMEGA renews lo Speedmaster 38 mm with seven new references, introducing aesthetic changes that strengthen the link with the Moonwatch without giving up the most elegant and versatile identity of the collection.

It's not a revolution, but rather a targeted intervention on proportions and details. The result is a Speedmaster 38 mm cleaner, sportier and more consistent with the historical codes of the family, offered in a range that spans from steel to two-tone configurations, up to versions with diamonds.

Uno Speedmaster 38 mm closer to the Moonwatch

Presented as a more compact and refined alternative within the family Speedmaster, the 38mm model has always maintained a distinct personality compared to the Moonwatch Professional. The new references now seek an even more evident meeting point between these two souls.

The most immediate change concerns the chronograph counters. The oval shapes that characterized the previous generation give way to rounded counters, more traditional and more closely related to the aesthetics of the Moonwatch.

The text on the dial has also been reduced, making the overall look cleaner and more legible. OMEGA has also revised the bezel, which is now visually thicker and features the distinctive “Dot Over Ninety,” the dot positioned above the 90 on the tachymetric scale. A seemingly minor detail, but one that is particularly significant for enthusiasts. Speedmaster.

The result is a more balanced and mature design, capable of retaining the practicality of the 38 mm case and, at the same time, communicating more immediately its belonging to the family. Speedmaster.

The new five-link bracelet

All new references are paired with a five-link bracelet inspired by the style of the MoonwatchDepending on the configuration, the center links can be polished or brushed.

This is an important update, not just aesthetically. The bracelet also helps accentuate the watch's sporty character, integrating better with the new geometry of the subdials and the more assertive bezel.

Two automatic Co-Axial calibers

OMEGA has chosen two different self-winding Co-Axial movements. Six of the seven new references are equipped with the Calibre 3330 and feature a date window. The steel version with a black dial is the only one to forgo the date display and uses the Calibre 3332, reserved exclusively for this configuration.

The choice to eliminate the date from the model that is aesthetically closest to the Moonwatch It appears particularly coherent. The black dial thus acquires greater symmetry and cleanliness, becoming probably the most classic and immediately recognizable offering of the entire range.

«Lo Speedmaster 38mm has always been inspired by the Moonwatch, while maintaining its own identity in terms of proportions, color and simplicity“, explained Raynald Aeschlimann, President and CEO of OMEGA. “With this latest update we have pushed the inspiration even further, enriching the DNA Speedmaster but preserving the refined and unique nature that has always distinguished the 38 mm range».

The three new steel versions

The collection includes three references made entirely of steel. The version with a black dial is the one that interprets the language of the MoonwatchIt combines a black aluminum bezel with a matte-finish black lacquered dial. The hands and indexes are treated with white Super-LumiNova, while the bracelet features three rows of brushed links alternating with two smaller, polished ones.

It is also the only model in the new range without a date display and equipped with Calibre 3332. A choice that underlines its more essential and instrumental character.

The model with a white lacquered dial is decidedly more luminous, paired with a blue ceramic bezel with a white enamel tachometric scale. The hands and indexes feature a blue CVD treatment, which is also repeated on the numerals visible inside the date window. The contrast between white and blue gives the watch a contemporary look, without distancing it from the sporty tradition of the Speedmaster.

The third steel reference features a warm gray aluminum bezel and a silvery opaline dial treated with PVD. The PVD-coated Sedna™ gold hands add a warmer note, complemented by the combination of brown and Sedna™ gold used for the subdial hands.

The two-tone versions in Moonshine™ and Sedna™ gold

OMEGA is also expanding the collection with two two-tone interpretations. The first combines a stainless steel case with a polished 18K Moonshine™ gold bezel. The green aluminum ring houses a yellow gold tachymeter scale, while the silvery opaline dial is complemented by PVD-coated Moonshine™ gold hands and indexes with white Super-LumiNova.

Moonshine™ gold also appears in the smallest links of the bracelet, creating a chromatic continuity between case, dial and bracelet.

The second two-tone version instead takes up the characteristic “cappuccino” style already associated with the Speedmaster 38 mm. The ivory dial is paired with contrasting brown subdials, while the stainless steel case features a polished 18K Sedna™ gold bezel and a brown aluminum insert. The bracelet's small central links are also crafted from Sedna™ gold.

Lens Position: 2240

Among the seven new features, this is probably the configuration that best preserves the more sophisticated and less instrumental soul of the Speedmaster 38 mm.

Due Speedmaster 38 mm with diamond bezel

The collection is completed by two references featuring a bezel set with 52 diamonds, for a total weight of 1,53 carats.

The first features an ice blue PVD-coated dial, while the second has a white mother-of-pearl dial. Both are finished with rhodium-plated hands and baton indexes filled with white Super-LumiNova.

The use of diamonds does not completely transform the watch's identity. The structure of the chronograph, the new circular design of the counters, and the inspired bracelet Moonwatch in fact they maintain a recognisable link with the rest of the range.

A more coherent and transversal collection

With this update, OMEGA seems to want to more precisely define the role of the Speedmaster 38 mm. The model retains smaller dimensions, automatic movement and a much wider choice of colours than the Moonwatch Professional. At the same time, the new circular subdials, the "Dot Over Ninety," the smaller lettering, and the redesigned bracelet eliminate some of the aesthetic distance that separated the two collections.

The black, dateless reference represents the project's most purist expression, while the white, two-tone, and diamond-set versions demonstrate how the same architecture can be interpreted in very different ways. A measured yet significant evolution that makes the collection even more versatile and likely even more interesting for an audience seeking a Speedmaster compact, automatic and less conventional.
